"I think people should be able to feel valuable, and feel like they're paid attention to, in a personalized way. And I think it became very clear very quickly that that is not what kids growing up here are getting."
Bianca Zaharescu was born in Romania in 1990, and moved to the US at the age of two. After attending Martin Luther King Elementary School and Urbana Middle School, she attended Uni High as a part of the class of 2007. Zaharescu was introduced to Habitat through Habitat club at Uni, and after going on a week-long volunteer trip, she decided she would take a gap year working there. During her gap year, after seeing the way children were treated regularly, and after seeing the state of the school systems, she realized she wanted to make a difference long-term. Once she had completed college, Zaharescu moved on to found Spring Initiative with Anja Thiessen. Today, she lives in Clarksdale MS, and is program director at Spring. Through Spring, she has helped combat the educational disadvantages children have in the Delta.
