"When you're in education yourself, you're making yourself better -- you're just learning yourself. But to be able to share that with somebody else was such an incredible feeling."
Sarah Vaughen was born in 1995 in Buffalo, New York, but later moved to Champaign-Urbana and attended Uni High School. During her time at Uni High she was a leader of the Habitat club and went on three trips to Clarksdale, Mississippi. This inspired Vaughen to take a gap year from 2013-2014 to Clarksdale. Throughout her gap year she worked as a daily tutor at the afterschool program, Spring Initiative. She was also an advisory board member in 2014. In addition, she worked through the State AmeriCorps program as a first grade assistant teacher and reading tutor at Sherard Elementary School, a public elementary school in Coahoma County, MS. Now Vaughen is a student at Washington University but she has taken seven trips back to Clarksdale to volunteer at Spring Initiative.
