"I'll tell people that doing volunteer work with habitat is an unforgettable experience. Not only do we help those in need, my motto is: "We Care, we motivate, we build" to better lives down here. That's what's most important."
Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s, Sharon Bates was involved in numerous aspects of Habitat for Humanity. She began her involvement in 2004. When her son JJ, who did volunteer work with Habitat, moved to Champaign she decided to take his place. Her main role in terms of Habitat is working in the job sites and doing framing, plumbing, electrical work, and other parts of construction. Bates is actually a homeowner through Habitat and built the house she is currently living in. She is currently still volunteering with Habitat, working with the New Covenant Church, and helping Uni High volunteers.
